Historical Architecture: Defined, Refined     Gary Shaffer

In his presentation in May, Gary hopes to have some fun discussing and distinguishing between “Historical Architecture” and buildings, “architecture”, involved in historical events. As a result of the very significant involvement of Adams County in the American Civil War there is constant confusion related to the whole term of “historical architecture”. Mr Shaffer also will also discuss some of the significant buildings constructed after the Civil War as well as the earlier structures dealing with the practice of architecture in the “hinterlands” of the rural towns and communities common in Adams County. Therefore, the program will feature a mixture of the significant structures that exist on the square, the Lutheran Theological Seminary campus, Gettysburg College as well smaller commercial and residential buildings exhibiting the trademarks of a more local indigenous architecture.
